Joteria Night

EVENT GOALS
  • To hold space for Queer/Trans Chicanx/Latinx students
  • To celebrate ourselves and our communities-- post-Pulse & ongoing violence that we experience, we need spaces to decompress and be in solidarity with each other
  • This is a space to build community, practice self-care, and engage in meaningful conversations about the intersections of being queer/trans and Chicanx/Latinx
EVENT DESCRIPTION
This event is a night of Jotería to celebrate our trans and queer Chicanx & Latinx community. Come play Lotería and trivia, make your own face masks and loteria cards, create self-care kits and enjoy some pan dulce! Joteria is a term that stems from a queer slur that has been reclaimed to be used as a sign of empowerment by the Chicanx and Latinx queer and trans community. The term is also used to signify decolonial queer/feminist politics and progress within the community as well as refer to and support queer and trans Latin and Chicanx people. It is important to host events like these for Queer/Trans Chicanx/Latinx students where we can celebrate ourselves, each other, and our communities. With tragedies, such as the Pulse shooting in 2016, and the ongoing violence that we face today it’s important to create spaces to decompress and be in solidarity with one another. This space has been created to build community, practice self-care, and engage in meaningful conversations about the intersections of our identities.
