Pachanga

Learn about Pachanga
Pachanga is an annual celebration that uplifts Afro-Latiné culture, identity, and visibility. Organized by student interns from the Chicanx Latinx Resource Center and the African American Resource and Cultural Center (AARCC), this vibrant event showcases the deep historical and cultural connections between African and Latin American communities.
Since the 16th century, African arrivals to Latin America have powerfully influenced the music, traditions, and cultural expressions of the region. Despite colonial efforts to erase African heritage, African musical traditions thrived—leaving a lasting imprint on Latin American culture. Instruments like the conga, kora, and marimba are just a few examples of how African sounds were adapted into new, enduring musical forms.
Afro-Latiné communities continue to face underrepresentation and struggle for recognition within both Latiné and Black communities. Pachanga creates space for celebration, affirmation, and education—centering Afro-Latinidad as a dynamic fusion of African and Latiné roots.
The event brings the UCSC community together through live music, dance, and joyful expression, creating a space of unity and cultural pride.

Pachanga 2024-25
Each year, our interns create a zine that uplifts and celebrates Afro-Latiné identities, cultures, and lived experiences. This student-led project is both a creative expression and an act of visibility—highlighting the richness, diversity, and complexity within the Afro-Latiné community.
The zine features reflections, interviews, poetry, art, and cultural insights, all curated to spark connection, conversation, and celebration. While the zine centers Afro-Latiné voices, it is open to all who want to learn, engage, and celebrate in solidarity.
