The Latino Alumni Network (LAN) was founded in 2000 in conjunction with a reunion, Encuentro 2000. Three alumni—UC Santa Cruz professor Olga Najera-Ramirez, Andres Jimenez, and Leticia Quezada—formed the initial organizing committee. LAN is a unique partnership of Chicanx and Latinx-identified alumni, and El Centro, the Chicanx Latinx Resource Center which is a special support services program for current students at UC Santa Cruz.
Mission and Purpose
LAN is a service, public interest, educational, and cultural organization that serves to enhance the academic progress and professional development of UC Santa Cruz students, faculty, administrators, and alumni interested in Latino issues or providing service to Latino communities. The Network works to encourage communication among alumni and foster educational opportunity at UC Santa Cruz and throughout the UC system. It will accomplish this goal by creating academic and career opportunities for current students of the University. The Network will sponsor scholarships, internships, and mentorships, foster greater communication among alumni, faculty, students, and staff, and participate in discussions of policies affecting Chicanx and Latinx constituents at the University.
Activities
LAN conducts and sponsors alumni reunions, statewide and regional meetings, mentorship programs, internships, special scholarship funds as well as other programs to support currently enrolled UC Santa Cruz students. The Network will convene regularly scheduled forums involving alumni, faculty, students, staff, and campus administrators interested in Latinx educational progress. To enhance the success of these activities and strengthen the alumni group, the Network will work with campus departments and the UC Santa Cruz Alumni Engagement office to actively recruit new members from all graduating classes.
